TorStar, the parent Company of StarMetro Vancouver announced that they would be closing all StarMetro Newspapers across Canada. This includes papers in Halifax, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.  Other changes within TorStar were also announced today.

Unifor has posted a press release here calling on Parliament to act to save local news in light of these layoffs at TorStar.

StarMetro Vancouver served the Union with Section 54 notice under the BC Labour Relations code.  The code lays out a 60 day notice period where the parties meet to negotiate an adjustment plan, that could include enhancements to severance for example.  The Company informed us that they plan to run the last StarMetro Vancouver paper at the end of December.  They also informed us that they would be posting 5 new jobs at the Toronto Star based in Vancouver as a bureau.  Local 2000 represents 11 members at this newspaper.  We are currently working with the Company to select some dates to conduct our Section 54 notice discussions.
