The results are in on our two recent Local 2000 referendums.

Question 1 asked whether members supported a merger with Local 827M, a Terrace-based broadcast local with about 25 members. 94% voted yes. Local 827M previously approved the merger. It now moves on to the national union for their (hopeful) approval.

Question 2 asked whether we supported adding the following shop steward language to our constitution and a related policy to our policy book:

Shop stewards are an integral part of the union. They are the eyes and ears on the floor, ensuring employers follow the contract and that members’ rights are respected. All shop stewards must undergo training provided by Unifor. Their duties include but not limited to: ensuring employers are following the contract and other applicable legislation and conducting investigations and filing grievances when they do not, communication and consultation with members, liaising with elected officers, attending union meetings, posting union notices on the union board.  Shop stewards build and keep the union strong, providing leadership, communication and guidance to rank and file members.  In the minds of our members, shop stewards are their voice within the union and within the workplace”.

And

The policy manual of Local 2000 be amended to include the following, “Shop stewards in Local 2000 who have completed Unifor’s Three Day Grievance Handling and Workplace Leadership (GHWL) course. shall receive a remuneration of $5 per month, paid annually.”

It was approved by 92.2% of our members.

Thanks to those who voted.
