Purdy’s members voted overwhelming in favour of a strike yesterday, strengthening their mandate by three percentage points.

The bargaining committee held a second strike vote on July 14, because the first strike vote is set to expire when the union and employer next meet for mediation in late August. In the first vote, held on May 15, results showed 89 per cent were in favour of a strike. In the second vote, held yesterday, 92 per cent were in favour.

“This second vote gave us an even stronger mandate, and we heard from many many members that wages, seniority and rapidly rising inflation and costs of living were major issues for them,” said Jennifer Moreau, secretary-treasurer of Local 2000.

Unifor Local 2000 has been negotiating with the employer for four months. Those talks are now in mediation with the Labour Board, and the next meeting dates are set for late Aug. 24 to 26.
