Unifor Local 2000 members at Purdy’s Chocolatier voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action after talks with the employer broke down earlier this week.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, union members from Purdy’s Chester Street location and Kingsway factory convened at Unifor’s regional office in New Westminster to cast their ballots, and the result was a 98% strike mandate.

Talks broke off with the company on Monday, Feb. 3, with benefits, pension and wages being the main sticking points for the union. The contract does not expire until April 30 of this year.

“I want to thank the members for supporting the bargaining committee with such a strong mandate,” said Local 2000 President Brian Gibson. “We hope to get back to the table soon to bargain a fair deal.”
