Lee Bacchus was a much-loved writer who worked as a journalist for 20 years after he graduated from Langara’s Journalism program. His family and friends of Lee are honouring his legacy and are creating a scholarship in his memory. Read John Mackie’s obituary on Lee’s lifework here.
The scholarship will provide tuition help to a student entering the journalism program who is coming to it after other forays in life. Lee started his studies at Langara’s legendary journalism program in 1980, when he was 30, after having completed a degree and worked as a teacher and then a private tutor for several years.
He was hired right after graduation by the Vancouver Sun, where he impressed and inspired many with his sharp portraits of personalities or events and his versatility. He covered sports, television, movies, books and general features in his career at the Vancouver Sun and later The Province. For many readers and writers, Lee embodied a new style of journalism that combined an almost novelistic attention to detail along with a distinctive voice and unique turns of phrase.
His sudden death at the age of 70 was a shock to everyone. The memorial scholarship will help, in a small way, to do what Lee did for so many others when he was alive – provide encouragement and inspiration to those starting out.
This memorial fund will provide about $1,000 to an incoming student each year in either the Diploma or the Certificate program.
