HELP WANTED: JOURNALIST

Okanagan Newspaper Group, which includes The Daily Courier in Kelowna, the Penticton Herald, Westside Weekly and other specialty magazines and products, is seeking to hire a seasoned, highly motivated Journalist who is accustomed to working in a fast-paced daily newspaper environment. This is a full-time, union position under the collective agreement.

The successful candidate must have a keen eye for detail, and be equally at home editing news, business, arts and sports copy. Editors are expected to balance accuracy and speed, meet deadlines, and oversee quality control. She/he will be a savvy communicator, and be able to give and receive instruction with grace.

This is a Monday-Friday, 9-5 position with rare, but occasional weekend or evening work as needed (elections, breaking news, etc).

QUALIFICATIONS

Who you are:

• Experience slotting a daily newspaper
• Five or more years of experience in a fast-paced daily newsroom
• Talent for writing clever headlines with clarity that captures the essence of a story • Excellent grammar, comprehension and editing skills
• Strong organizational skills with good attention to detail
• Good interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to resolve conflict and solve problems
• Proficiency in CP style
• Strong design sense
• Excellent page building skills using Quark XPress (or an equivalent)
